The fact that youâre here on this page to try and get an answer to that question means you are curious and you are seeking answers ⌠weâre glad youâre here. The short answer is âYes,â God is personal, but letâs dig deeper. Â
Everyone is born with something called âA God shaped holeâ in their life ⌠itâs the place in you that only God can fill. When we try to fill it with something other than God, we search for meaning in other ways, ways that offer only temporary happiness at best. It wasnâtalways like that (more on that shortly), but the Good News is that God wants to fill that hole ⌠and He will!!Â
Where did this hole come from? When God created all that is in the world â including humans like you and me â He created us for the simple purpose of sharing His goodness and joy with us. And indeed, there was a time when all of humanity had a perfect and personal relationship with God and nothing separated God from His creation. But then we, through Adam and Eve, decided that we knew better than God what we needed. We made a decision to disobey God (Genesis 3). That disobedience of Adam and Eve created this hole and it has had a ripple effect throughout every generation since. How do we fill that hole?Â
STEP ONE: Admit you have a need.Â
Our disobedience to God (something the Bible calls sin) created a separation from God, and since then people have tried many ways to bridge this gap between themselves and God. But no matter how hard we try, we will never be able to bridge that gap due to sin which separates us from a perfect and holy God.Â
âFor all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.â Romans 3:23Â
STEP TWO: Ask for ForgivenessÂ
Just like with a human relationship, when you hurt someone, the healing of that relationship begins when you ask for forgiveness. The same is true with God. Another word used when asking for forgiveness is the word repent, or turning away from the behavior that caused the hurt.Â
Admitting your sin and asking for forgiveness is offering up yourself as a type of sacrifice. But since God is holy â meaning set apart and pure â the only sacrifice worthy of reconnecting us to God has to be equally holy. As humans, we will never be able to achieve this ... we simply arenât, and will never be, good enough. The only way to offer a sacrifice worthy of God, is for God to do it himself â to, literally, sacrifice himself. And he did, by sending his son Jesus to be an acceptable sacrifice and die in or place. Thatâs as personal as it gets! Jesus did something we could not do, he unilaterally took on our sin and became the only one who can fill that hole in our lives. Itâs this truth that the Apostle Paul wrote about in Ephesians 2:8-9. Â
âFor it is by grace you have been saved, through faithâand this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of Godâ not by works, so that no one can boast.âÂ
STEP THREE: Believe in Jesus.Â
The entire crux of the Christian faith hinges upon who you believe Jesus is and what you believe he did when he died on the cross and was raised from the dead. Â
âFor there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.â 1st Timothy 2:5Â
âFor Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that He might bring us to God.â 1st Peter 3:18Â
STEP FOUR: Surrender and Receive Â
Because Jesus was God and was able to offer himself as the perfect sacrifice, he fills the hole in our lives in a very real, personal and intimate way! This is the Good News! Starting this personal relationship with God begins with the decision to trust Him as the only one who can truly forgive you and save you. Itâs a matter of surrendering your life to Him.Â
âLook! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in ...â Jesus in Revelation 3:20Â
âIf you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.â Romans 10:9Â
This sincere and heartfelt confession and surrender is what it means to make Jesus your Lord and Savior. You now can experience an intimacy with God that is very personal and very real. Â
God has been calling you to Himself, He desires to fill that âGod shaped holeâ with himself if you ask Him to. Our hope and prayer is that you will listen to His voice.Â
âAs Godâs partners, we beg you not to accept this marvelous gift of Godâs kindness and then ignore it. For God says, âAt just the right time, I heard you.âŻâŻâŻOn the day of salvation, I helped you.â Indeed, the âright timeâ is now. Today is the day of salvation.â Â
